Last set of stones came back as struvite

Re: Phosphate binders for struvite prevention

You can tell them that if they stick to the urinary s/o it shouldn't get more UTIs too due to the urinary acidification.

Re: Phosphate binders for struvite prevention

Whilst I'm certain the diet's been broken, I'm equally certain today that there's a UTI - urine collected at cystotomy today was full of wbcs, so sample gone to lab. It was always likely in this dog in any case, but I wondered if anybody had tried phosphate binders in with the diet to try to further reduce struvite formation. can't find anything on it anywhere, so would suggest that one's a dead bust.

Re: Phosphate binders for struvite prevention

Not much doubt about dietary indiscretion IMHO.
My money would be urease producing bacteria and dietary indiscretions.

[/quote]

Yep, would entirely agree with these; the second is something that the owners absolutely deny to their support socks is happening, but sometimes let slip about the dog going round to the neighbours, who feed it titbits etc etc. It's our inability to absolutely stop this that made me wonder about phosphate binding - but whether this would be ineffective in the face of UTIs is what I don't know.

We'll be sending urine off for culture today in any case.

My money would be urease producing bacteria and dietary indiscretions. Worth checking water intake and urine SG as this may be part of the issue - small breeds can produce concentrated urine => xstal formation
