I've been seeing a 6 yr old FS ferret that has slowly progressive truncal alopecia and vulvar enlargement. She was spayed as a juvenile. She has had these signs for aprox 6 weeks, and is otherwise very well, edud normally. Is that wrong or does it not last as long for controlling adrenal disease as it does breeding?

Re: FS ferret with hairloss and vulvar enlargement

Hi Alex

Vulval enlargement, behavioural signs and pruritus being the first to respond. This is with the 4.7mg Implant.

By 4-6 weeks hair regrowth and weight gain should be evident. If the signs fail to respond then the tumour may have advanced to an automonous state and be non-responsive to the cessation of LH production.

Duration of control against the adrenal disease is usually greater than 12mths so we would advise yearly implantation but monitoring for recurrence should be advised to the owners as some cases have recurred earlier than 12mths.

Re: FS ferret with hairloss and vulvar enlargement

Should last up to a year :-)

Re: FS ferret with hairloss and vulvar enlargement

[quote user="Mark Rowland"]

(Or implant some deslorelin anyway if finances are restrictive)

Finances are definitely limited; so if it is adrenal disease I would expect the deslorelin to reverse the vulvar enlargement quite quickly? I've been led to believe it will last about a month before wearing off. Thank you.

Re: FS ferret with hairloss and vulvar enlargement

I second the ultrasound as most useful diagnostic tool.

Not all of the hormones that may be secreted by out of control ferret adrenals are picked up on normal assays so it does make ovarian remnant unlikely but doesn't eliminate 'ferret adrenal disease'.
