Thanks for various suggestions. It hasn't come back in a month so I hope it is still well.

Impossible to say without further investigation, but I guess differentials would include glaucoma, hypopyon, and a retrobulbar mass or abscess.

I know this is a hamster, but our practice guinea pig had an eye looking very like this one recently. X-rays showed an abscess around it caudal upper molar. Tooth and eye have both been removed and he is much happier.

What type of hamster is it?

Campbells have a genetic predisposition to glaucoma and is reasonably? common, have seen a few, no real treatment except enucleation

Space occupying lesion, yes, we considered that, but no pain, no general illness, so probably not an abscess, and no change since November, so not immediately suspecting a tumour, although that stays in our mind without mentioning it to the little girkl whose hamster it is.....
