I've never heard this before and there is nothing mentioned in the BSAVA formulary.
I once had a nasty bout of giardia shortly before going on a skiing holiday. Now we all know that skiing trips are as much about the apres-ski imbibing of large quantities of alcoholic beverages as the activities on snow and I faced a dilemma as a standard 7day course of metronidazole would have overlapped part of the ski trip. I read that it is equally effective over 3 days if you took mega-doses and I'd be finished on the day before the holiday. Now you know how hard it is to swallow a paracetamol tablet but try taking a dozen big dry nasty bitter tasting metronidazole tablets in one go without retching - they felt like they were sitting in a little stack in my oesophagus. Still if worked and I was able to have a shandy or two with no side effects.

Re: Metronidazole in Collies

Metronidazole. Milbemycin. Moxidectin.

What, I wonder, do these words all have in common? My own recollections of college are hazy in patches, and it's possible that I may have misheard some of the information coming at me. Just a thought.......

(Years ago, while travelling with my OH, I was laid a bit low after a meal which had included some beer, preserved with formalin. I asked the OH to get me a metoclopramide tablet from the first aid kit, as we were about to get on a bus. After swallowing the tablet, I looked down at the bottle to find that it was actually a metronidazole. B*gger. OH said, oh, it starts with the same letter. How much of a problem can it cause?)

... ahem, but seriously - have a look at this brilliantly written article on the MDR1 gene deletion in collies.

The definitive source for which drugs are involved with the defect is at Washington State University, no mention is made of Metronidazole there. The problem with this subject is that there is so much righteous and ill-informed hysteria around in the collie world about it that if a collie so much as breaks wind after having any medication whatsoever it is likely to be blamed on the MDR1 gene and immediately stuck on the ever expanding lists of "dangerous drugs" put about by the various breed societies.

Does your colleague have a reference for the metronidazole problem?
