I saw two years old female Cocker spaniel with lumps on her chin. The lumps has grown within four months. The fine needle aspiration has been shown a lot of eosinophils. The lesion is not itchy, but doesn't stops to grow. I know that treatment

Re: eosinophilic granuloma in cocker spaniel

The only other thing I thought of was eosinophillic folliculitis and furunculosis?
I called to the owner and have heard that lumps stopped to grow and today are smaller than previously. After the last visit I start with cephaleksine and that's it. Maybe somebody have explanation of this? :)

So, of course the owners doesn't want surgery. Happy owners, happy me. :)

The other lump just appear on the upper lip. Remove the mass might be an option but I need to find the reason why they are growing. Now the lumps are only on the chin and upper lip, after few weeks more lumps I could find in another place. So, what could be done to stop it?

Any ideas? Or should I start with biopsy?

I would appreciate any tips.

The best bet would be a quick incisional biopsy - sedate, jab of local & a 6mm punch biopsy from the mass. That way you will be able to make an informed decision. If cost is a factor I have occasionally with this type of case removed the mass with narrow margins and sent the whole mass for analysis. That way if it's benign (eg histiocytoma) then you have done enough, however you need to prepare the owners for the possibility that repeat surgey might be needed if indicated by the lab report (eg mast cell yumour).

Cheers,

CKCS are also prone to eosinophillic diseases such as stomatitis and bronchitis but I am unaware of them being predisposed to EG's? If they are EG then pred would be my choice but I am a pathologist and so have limited experience with results. Also look into trigger factors i.e. fleas if they are EGs?
