scalibor is good sandfly repellent but is not that good with flea and ticks so we use advantix, also repels sandfly.

from march till october ,in greece, people who want to keep their dogs free of leishmaniosis ,ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis use advantix spot on every 3-4 weeks and scalibor every 8 weeks and citronella sprays at dusk.

vaccine just came out here.

Re: Sandfly prevention

Neil posted as I was looking for a link!

Re: Sandfly prevention

Advantix has a 2 or 3 week licence claim against Sand Flies.
From data sheet

The product provides repellent (anti-feeding) activity against ticks, sand flies and mosquitoes, thus preventing the repelled parasites from taking a blood meal and thus reducing the risk of disease transmission (e.g. Borreliosis, Rickettsiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Leishmaniasis). However, there may be an attachment of single ticks or bites by single sand flies or mosquitoes.

Re: Sandfly prevention

Don't virbac have a vaccine; is it available in the UK?

Re: Sandfly prevention

Scalibor collars are the only preventative I can think of, apart from keeping animals indoors at dawn and dusk. no idea how effective either concept is - i jsut had a friend move to costa Rica, her dogs are scalibored up to the eyeballs and they still got Ehrlichia, and the collars are supposed to chase ticks away as well as last 3 months...

If they don't like the smell, best they leave the dog safe in the UK. They won't like treating the dog for Leishmaniasis either. Remember heart worm prevention as well.
