The dog's xrays show a moderate bronchial pattern with some bronchiectasis in the cranioventral lung lobes. The BAL came back as neutrophilic

Re: Terrier with airway disease

Not sure why, but I have often found Bisolvon powder useful in these cases especially in old dogs. I usually try this before I bring out the big guns like nebulizers and inhalers. It's certainly cheaper and more owner compliant.

Re: Terrier with airway disease

Martin.

Sorry to re-instate this thread, but I saw you mentioned using beclametasone inhaler instead of flixotide. I would like to try this fo a dog with chronic bronchitis due to the massive cost difference. Do you know of any reason why we use flixotide perferentially, or is it just myth and because its the one in the SA formulary?

Many thanks,

I treated twice with panacur 1 mth apart, 7 days.

Re: BAL report, there was a 'mixed neutrophilic and eosinophilic' inflammation. I haven't start preds at all yet, as I'm worried about an infection. If the C & S comes back negative, I will start them, but am worried about starting them before this!

Thank you for your comments!

Re: Terrier with airway disease

What exactly did the BAL say? Which of the mentioned cell types predominated.

If it is supportive of an eosinophilia bronchopneumopathy then steroids would be indicated. My approach to these is to use oral prednisolone initially and then transition to inhaled if the response is good.

Beclametasone inhalers are much cheaper than Flixotide. Inhaled steroids safer than preds especially if there is the risk of secondary infection.

Re: Terrier with airway disease

?checked for lungworm

Re: Terrier with airway disease

Would have thought bronchiectasis at this age already makes px fairly guarded. Any panacur / advocate as trial Rx? If true eosinophilic pneumonia a dose of steroid will give a very good response quickly so if antibiotics not improving cough, do trial rx of both for 1 week and re-assess xray? pulmonary fibrosis also DD in this breed.

Bisolvin and nebuliser can help if muco-ciliary escalator failing. Check for open fires, owners smoking, air fresheners - ie air quality / humidity esp where dog sleeps.

Tend to stick to prednisolone as flixitide quite expensive if used every day.

If no response on above consider cardiac causes?
