Well I'm sure bosses can decide whatever they want recorded - and many practices do record far more than the Sch 2 CDs and ketamine which are specified by the VMD and RCVS respectively.

Re: dangerous drug registers

I remember another veterinary surgeon (practice owner ) telling me about a problem he had with an ex assistant

There were 2 flats above the surgery The assistant lived in 1 and the practice owners adult son in the other

One Saturday night the son heard an appalling row downstairs so investigated, and found the assistant and a friend had been sniffing a mixture of iso and nitrous oxide, and the assistant was unconcious and not breathing

Luckily, the son's hobby was scuba diving, so he was trained in resuscitation techniques and brought her round (to be sacked )

Most medicines are dangerous so registers are a bit pointless. One of the most potentially dangerous drugs we have sits under the sink in the office. It is Paracetomol!
I seem to recall we were told by H&S advisors that we weren't allowed to keep aspirin or paracetamol around for staff to use! So of course we don't, of course not.

Refer to the BVA 'Good Practice Guide on Veterinary Medicines' (available to BVA members on the website) for full details. BSAVA website also has good guidance notes.
Only Sch 2 CDs need to be recorded in a register, legally.

RCVS GtoPC says you "should" keep ketamine locked up and "should" keep an informal register. VMD do not enforce this. Belgravia House have no power to make new laws. Having said that, obviously you should keep it locked up when not in use, and keep some sort of record (the form of which is up to you and can be according to circumstance: the practice with one vet and one nurse that has one bottle that's rarely disturbed needs hardly any record).

We've been told to start recording tramadol and epiphen recently. Apparently other practices have had serious problems with the misuse of these drugs and that's why they are asking us to keep better records. It's a big headache for our head nurse, she checks the book every week and it's rare that it's been done correctly so then she has to work out where it's gone wrong. For something like tramadol it's a pain to remember to fill in the book every time you prescribe a few capsules, particularly when you have to search around for a pen.
