of course when everything goes wrong it's your own cat... She is a 2.5yo spayed female 4kg, had an RTA on the 30th, could be operated on on the second of january. Picked her up on the 4th when she had developed a huge hematoma on her hind leg

Re: transfusion side effects

Re: transfusion side effects

just to let you know she is doing a bit better day by day. Fever is down, we had some issues with bladder atony, but this is getting better with the help of betanechol. Took the stitches out today, wounds looking perfect. More strength in the legs. I'm getting slightly optimistic :-)

Blood was only a few hours at least and properly stored and cooled. I'm not really concerned about any contamination there. And I would have expected a slower reaction from contaminated blood. Anyway, as long as I top up the metamizol every 18-20 hrs she is much more comfortable, hkt today 24.4%, regenerative, plts 661, full work went to external lab, results in tomorrow. keeping my fingers crossed...

Re: transfusion side effects
So far so good
Really pleased, hope she continues to improve. Have you spoken to the referral centre who dod the transfusion? Temperature is down to 37,8 in the morning, now 39,2C, has passed stools again, seems though that I have to empty the bladder by hand (until yesterday she did that herself), more alert. Todays meds were buprenorphine, lactulose and nacl, no lab works done, I just wanted to give it a rest as clinical picture seems ok. Eating from syringe, sleeping a lot, no hint of yellow on any mucous membranes. So far so good (how do you do the fingers crossed sign?)

Re: transfusion side effects

How's your little girl?

Re: transfusion side effects

Danke!
I've thought of the dex because I'm frightened of haemolysis, there was none this morning, and no, I haven't checked protein levels as I'm at home with her.

I must admit I'm one of the bad ones occasionally using steroids and NSAIds together and so far I was lucky, maybe as this one has gone so pear shaped this'll go wrong, too, so yep, will add git protection, thanks for the reminder.

Re: transfusion side effects

Do you mean methimazole? If so why? What is she actually doing? Collapsed? Vomiting? Dysnoeic? Painful? Just feeling sh1t?

If she is not haemolysing (I assume you have checked a smear) then dex probably not indicated, plus she has been on metacam so care re git ulceration, probably add some sucralfate and an antacid.

Have you checked her protein levels and electrolytes?

Re: transfusion side effects

Best wishes
