Also last month in a sea lion, well in the morning and found drowned on the bottom of the tank 2 hours later, with a mesenteric torsion on PM.

Interesting the connection with EPI, will keep it in mind....!

Think I must be a little unlucky, this is the third one I've seen in 4 years in practice.

This was a 6 year old weimaraner, vomitted twice in the last 24hours. No previous history of any illness, no diet change apparent. Involved all large intestine so no chance for surgery. Just such a shock for the owners.

Abstract

Mesenteric torsion was diagnosed in 21 of 199 German Shepherd Dogs suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Eight dogs were euthanatized at the request of the owners; 4 dogs died at home before any treatment for mesenteric torsion was initiated. Surgery was performed on 9 dogs, all of which died during recovery from anesthesia.

Not a good diagnosis. The next one I fix will be the first.

The first I ever saw was a German Shepherd. It was after two gastric torsions in different dogs on successive nights, all at the same breeder. There had been some minor change in diet, although I cannot remember what.

Another was a farm collie. Unfortunately the senior partner (this was a long time ago) was involved, and although I did a brilliant surgical correction he would not let me start any intravenous fluid ("they're just ordinary folk, they can't afford that"). The dog died, of course. There was no identifiable change in diet involved.
