Excuse my ignorance on the life cycle of this parasite, please.
Should I include Lungworm in the DD of a 10 weeks old JRT with an expiratory wheeze and coughing.
No murmurs and maybe slight interstitial pattern on Lung fields.

I believe there is a well documented case in a Glasgow dog which had never ventured anywhere else.

I have seen a pre-patent period of 28-108 days cited (but also 38-57 days).

Angiostrongylus is generally called 'lungworm', because the adults are found mainly in the pulmonary arteries (but they are also found in the right ventricle). it was originally called 'French heartworm' , as it was first described in Toulouse in the 1860s.

Other parasites such as Dirofilaria immitis are called 'heartworm' - although they can also inhabit the pulmonary arteries as well as the right ventricle.

All a bit confusing.

Angiostrongylus vasorum, sometimes called French heartworm I believe, is what we mainly see in the UK I think, as opposed to Dirofilaria immitis or heartworm seen mainly in the US. From memory, crenosoma vulpis is mainly in foxes and occasionally infects dogs??

As Angiostrongylus vasorum infects dogs mainly via its intermediate hosts, slugs and snails, and as someone else has pointed out has a pre patent period of 7 weeks, it would not be top of a ddx list in this case. Maybe do a faecal smear to look for larvae? In any event treatment with panacur and/or Advocate may be a good idea.

We are overrun with foxes up here (Edinburgh west), hence the association with lungworm and crenosoma.
