It is of a chicken which has waht looka like a granulomatous growth on its leg just above the spur. No lameness, no pus. Rings a bell with anybody?

But they're fun to operate on! Birds that don't need operating microscopes and microsurgical instruments, bliss.
Thanks Marie, The owner confessed "having taken a knife to it" (suspecting it was an abscess) and it bled a bit, but not very much. Does seem vascular though, and that is what I have never seen on chicken legs before....

Oh dear. Probably looked less unpleasant before that! May still be a cellulitis/granuloma but excisional biopsy would be useful as a wide variety of neoplasms can occur on bird legs. Might be tricky to close though as it looks like there will be quite a deficit and this skin doesn't have much elasticity.

Re: Leg lesion in a chicken

Could be a myelolipoma which can be seen on birds limbs from time to time. They can bleed quite a bit but you would need histo (obviously ) to diagnose. It sounds as if the client isnt going to want to do much if they are chopping at it themselves. If you go for removal and do not have electrecautrey, you could use some Celox impregnated dressings. I was asked to do some work with the stuff in exotic species and it seems to work quite well.

How quickly has it appeared and any history of trauma? I would look at biopsy for diagnosis, but would have electrocautery to hand as it looks quite vascular!
