Rescued an RTA dog this week, young lurchery type. Amongst other things, had a caudoventrally dislocated hip, which was replaced without too much fuss under GA.
Hip came out that evening.
Revise your anatomy first, there are some big things thereabouts that don't need cutting!!

However, pain is definitely increased on palpation, so my theory would be that previous nerve compromise and post-trauma muscle slackness have gone. As the dog is living with me, I'm much more minded to keep replacing it under light GA and see where we come to. If by the time the skin lesions have all healed the hip's not stable, it'll be an excisional arthroplasty alongside castration.

Re: Self-reducing hips

Well, if you had bruising and swelling, and the swelling went down after a few days, might be that you had a less than 100% hip joint that went back in when things tightened back up.
