I have felt for some time that as a profession we are deskilling, and doing it to ourselves.

Anything aside boosters, neutering and dentistry is being referred to a greater or lesser extent.

The result is that new graduates are all looking to specialise as that's where the action is, or if staying in general practice are saying after 7 years 'What's that all about?'

We're not alone. I spoke to a retiring dentist the other day and the same is happening in their industry. Anything remotely complicated is referred. However the NHS dentists referral types have a weapon in that they send them back saying 'you can do this?'

it was further instilled only a few days ago when i chatted with vet to whom I cut my teeth operating wise. We had two operating tables in the same room and did all sorts of operations that these days you will never see in most practices. She said ' I can't recall the last X.Y.Z as they are either referred or euthanased.

Some practices I've worked in are trying and I hear there are companies trying to mentor by sending vets to ''spoke' practices, but are we too late?

Glorious South Devon is calling. Come and join us in this beautiful part of the South West with sea and moor a stones throw away.

We are a progressive, 95% small animal practice looking for an ambitious vet to join our team , with two well equipped branches. Be part of a relaxed, supportive and friendly team. Powderham Vets we pride ourselves on our place in the community and the level of care we provide to all our patients.

We have 15 minute consults and have digital x-ray, dental x-ray, endoscopy, ultrasound, laser therapy, stem cell therapy and in-house labs at both surgeries! Our case load is 95%+ small animal, the occasional horse and very little farm work (almost all gone now).
