I have a client with an eyeless white hamster(she rescued it from a litter expecting a short life expectancy). He is now 17 months old and well but overgrooming his flanks bilaterally. No parasites. Cytology no sign of infection. Found one paper suggesting they are prone to overgrooming but not a lot else about them. The fur is matted with saliva. Skin can be red sometimes but mainly it looks normal apart from the hair being groomed out. NAD abdominal palpation. Trial meloxicam made no difference?

I had a random query as to whether there are hormonal treatments that would safely suppress oestrus cycle in Guinea Pigs.

I have a GP who has previously passed necrotic uterine material and is currently bleeding each cycle and the last 2 have been more severe and the bleeding is currently ongoing.

I am aware that the best thing is to do an ovariohysterectomy however myself and the owners are concerned about the risks of this as we do not have a surgeon experienced in this procedure that can do the procedure (I am in NZ and there's nowhere I can refer her to).

The owner queried hormonal management and while I know hcg and suprelorin have been used or trialled for ovarian cysts I cannot find any information on oestrus suppression.

This is a 1 Yr old Syrian hamster bred by her owner. She developed an alopecic patch on her right flank which then became bilateral. She has patchy hair loss on her ventrum. She did have a crusty pyoderm around her face which resolved with antibiotics and changing her water container as she was chewing it and the self traumatising her face. Her owner has treated her with ivermectin to no effect.

Bright but grumpy and resents handling more than her other hamsters. Nothing obvious on abdominal palpation. Weight stable. Thirst normal. Cellotape normal other than the pyoderma around the face.

Skin scrapes or would it be worth biopsy if need to gas for scrape anyway?

Is it worth xeno if owner has already used the ivermectin drops she always uses?

Pain seemed to probably localise to the stifle. We xrayed him today, I am not terribly familiar with normal GP limb radiographs but there appear to be some degenerative changes in both stifles and there is also an opacity near the left hip which I am unsure of the significance.

Just wondered if anyone had any input as to the significance of the radiographic changes especially with regard to possible causes and prognosis. The GP is overweight, we have recommended weight loss.
